AVC Extra
AVC Extra is the second contribution top-up arrangement for members of the Railways Pension Scheme (Defined Benefits sections other than the Network Rail section) and members of the British Transport Police Force Superannuation Fund who joined before 1st April 2007.
The Network Rail section has a seperate top-up arrangement, details of which are available on the Pension Friend website. See Quick Links - My Benefits if you would like to know more about what the Pension Friend website can offer you.
Members of the Railways Pension Scheme (Defined Benefits sections other than the Network Rail section) and the British Transport Police Force Superannuation Fund who joined before 1st April 2007 can join AVC Extra if:
- you are already a contributing member of the scheme;
- you are a contributing member of BRASS the scheme’s main additional voluntary contribution arrangement; and
- your normal scheme and BRASS contributions added together come to 15% of your gross pay or 20% or your pensionable pay, whichever is higher.
AVC Extra is also available to members of the British Transport Police Force Superannuation Fund who joined after 1st April 2007.
If you are a member of the British Transport Police Force Superannuation Fund who joined after 1st April 2007 there are no qualifying restrictions for joining AVC Extra.
Your benefits from AVC Extra will be paid at the same time as your benefits from the scheme and BRASS although they will be paid separately.
The contributions you pay are tax-free. You choose how much you want to pay and your personnel office collect contributions through your payroll before you are taxed. This way you get the tax relief immediately.
